Automation ratio is the proportion of total AI sessions in a pipeline driven by automated batch processes versus direct human interaction. It contextualizes raw session counts: a day showing 400 sessions at 1-minute average duration is automation-dominant, not human-hyperactive.
The ratio matters for productivity interpretation because automated sessions and human sessions have different cost profiles, quality signals, and cognitive loads. A 70/30 automation-to-human split means most of the spend is deterministic batch work; a 30/70 split means most is exploratory or generative.
High automation ratios enable human contributors to sustain parallel workstreams because the automated work proceeds without supervision. They also compress apparent human output per session, since much of the visible throughput was not produced by human cognitive effort in real time.
